The Spark Story Bible

Augsburg Fortress, 2009

As a pastor I’ve been looking for a good children’s Bible to use during worship with kids and to promote to parents. Well, the Spark Story Bible is the one. Geared toward age 2 through second grade, it contains 150 Bible stories. Children will enjoy the color pictures.

Spark Study BibleThe stories are short, and each includes a question or action statement to help children think more about the story. When I read the Bible story and its action statement at a recent worship service, the kids started talking. It was great.

Our congregation is going to give these Bibles away as a gift to parents who bring their children for baptism. One parent said about this story Bible: “We read this to our kids every night and they love it.” High praise.

My hope is that more children will develop an early love for Scripture, keeping it as a huge part of their lives as they grow up. But it all begins with the family.

When families read Scripture together at home (outside the church setting), children begin to see its importance and that the Bible can (and should) be used outside of worship and Sunday school.

There is also a Spark Bible for third- through sixth-graders and a related Sunday school curriculum. We’re exploring using this curriculum in fall 2009.  Augsburg Fortress’ Spark Story Bible is definitely worth the investment. God bless you as you explore the greatest love letter of all with your children.

When I wrote the last paragraph of this review we were exploring the Spark Sunday School curriculum.  Well...we explored it and are using it.  So far my teachers love it.  This past Sunday we gave away our first copy of the Spark Story Bible at a baptism.  The parents were really excited about it.
