Why do people get baptized in water?

When Jesus was baptized the Spirit came to him. We receive the Spirit in our baptism too.
We get baptized because Jesus wants us to be God's sons and daughters. Because you have sins when you come to God's family — things that hurt and make God sad — Jesus first had to die to take those sins away from you. Those sins stay buried, but Jesus is risen to new life.
When you are baptized, your sins are drowned so that you will always live with God too. Jesus tells God's people to baptize you with water so you are washed clean to be part of God's family. Once you get wet you leave water footprints wherever you go, and people know you are God's child.
