Why do people worship so differently?

Jennifer Phelps Ollikainen

For children:

God made us in many different ways. We speak different languages. Some of us like to dance. Some of us like to sit quietly. Some of us like to do things over and over again. Others like to do new things all of the time. Christian communities are different, too, and worship God differently. These communities gather for worship in their own way based on how they have grown up as a church.

For adults:

Worship throughout the Christian church shares a common pattern:

• People are gathered by God.
• They hear God’s word in Scripture and preaching.
• They eat the sacramental meal.
• They are sent into the world to carry out God’s mission in Jesus Christ.

This common pattern contains common elements: reading from the Bible, prayer, song, baptism in the triune name of God and communion. In any particular Christian community, these elements are shaped by culture, denominational history and local practice. Music styles may be different. Worship leaders may be dressed differently. Different languages may be used.

If you attend a service that is different from what you are used to, encourage children to listen and watch for the common elements of all worship. Point out when the Bible is being read. Call attention to times of prayer. Find the baptismal font or pool. Look for crosses or other familiar Christian symbols in the worship space.

After worship, take time to talk about what happened. What was similar to the worship service you regularly go to? What was different? Ask children why they think it might be different. Ask the pastor or worship leaders to help explain anything you didn’t understand.
