Sharing 101

Mine, mine.
(Clasp your hands as if holding something tightly.)
Here's the sign.
(Look at your hands as if to say, "Aha!" This is also how we pray.)
God says share.
(Exaggerate how hard it can be to pull your hands apart. Pretend your hands are sticky like the little boy's hands on the cover of The Little Lutheran, July/August 2009 .)
And make it fine.
(Pull your hands apart, turn them over in a gesture of welcome and offering. Like Jesus offering food to 5,000 people!)
Here's an activity for you:
What if the reason we may hesitate to tell others about God is not that we're shy or can't find the words? What if sharing faith feels hard because it's about sharing? What if we would really prefer to keep God to ourselves, for ourselves? Hmmm. Probably not what God had in mind. Here's an activity for parents because we also find sharing so, so, so hard.
• Write a list — 10 reasons I want to keep God for myself.
• That list is exactly what God wants you to share with someone else — why God matters.
• Tell your child what God means to you.
• Mention to one person, at least: "I said a prayer for you" (after you do it of course).
• Surprise someone with a secret act of kindness.
• Pray (hands together) that God will pry (hands open) us into sharing.
